Enrichment is one of the best aspects of the student experience at St Matthew Academy; offering students the chance to try something new, get involved with something they are passionate about and develop lifelong skills that will support university and career applications and serve them well into their future.
In addition to a programme of activities, clubs and educational school trips, students have the opportunity to take part in a range of schemes, designed to enhance their skill set and attract prospective universities and employers.
Debate Mate is an educational charity, dedicated to improving social mobility through peer-to-peer debate mentoring. Already, our students have benefited from mentoring by students at top universities, providing them with the skills they need to become exceptional young leaders, including communication skills and higher-order thinking.
We also encourage students to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award; a scheme that inspires students to reach out of their comfort zone in a range of different experiences and skills, beyond the classroom. This personal achievement award is rated by employers as the ‘number one’ award they look for, outside of student achievement. The scheme requires students to volunteer in the local community, learn new skills, participate in physical activity and embark on an expedition phase. Stay posted for information about our current cohort of Year 11 students completing their Bronze award!
The St Matthew Academy Media Centre is a thriving hub of creativity, development and learning; offering students the opportunity to achieve qualifications and gain media experience. The St Matthew Academy Production Company (SMPC) produces a half termly news programme in partnership with the BBC Young Reporter and entry is granted on an assessment basis; with 20 places offered per year.
Students at St Matthew Academy are lucky to benefit from our partnership with The Brilliant Club; an award-winning charity that exists increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities through mentoring from PhD tutors, assignment support and university trips.
