Cultural Diversity Day at SMA

On Friday 18th October the Primary phase held a Cultural Diversity Day for Pupils and Staff.

Mr Umekwe with the help of parents and business in the local community set up an international food stall to celebrate the cultural diversity within St Matthew Academy. It was well attended by staff and pupils, it some pupils stating that is was one of their best experience since they attended the school.

Why does cultural diversity matter? - Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life.

A school climate and school’s culture directly impact student success. As a result, it is particularly important for the school culture (and the classroom culture) to reflect, acknowledge, and celebrate diversity.

The overall focus of the day was to provide pupils and staff with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the values of cultural diversity as they learn about each other’s culture and background.
