Physical Education

The PE department aims to provide opportunities for pupils to develop their skills and fitness in a range of physical activities.

We deliver a broad curriculum ensuring pupils receive a well-rounded experience of PE, promoting the understanding of lifelong activity leading to lifelong health.

Our Aims:

  • To enable our pupils to become skilful performers.
  • To encourage an understanding of health and fitness leading to educated choices about an active lifestyle.
  • To allow our pupils to become reflective performers.
  • To offer leadership opportunities to our young people.
  • To offer a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

It is the department’s policy that all pupils get changed for lesson regardless of injury or illness. This enables pupils to still be involved and provide opportunities for peer observation and analysis.

Key Stage 3

The PE curriculum offers 2 hours per week at Key Stage 3.

Pupils are taught the fundamental skills within outwitting opponents, net/wall games, health related fitness, athletics and striking and fielding activities.  Key Stage 3 PE lessons are enjoyable, challenging and provide pupils with a number of key core skills.  Activities covered include; Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Gymnastics, Fitness Training, Table Tennis, Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, Athletics, Rounders, Handball, Trampolining and Softball.

Key Stage 4 (Core PE)

The PE curriculum offers 1 hour per week at Key Stage 4. These lessons will look to build on the skills pupils have learned within physical activities covered at Key Stage 3; further enhancing their ability and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.  In Key Stage 4 PE lessons, pupils can work with children from the primary phase, providing pupils with key skills such as leadership, team work, communication, problem-solving and having the ability to provide feedback.

Academic Options at Key Stage 4

GCSE PE will equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well-being.  The combination of the physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for pupils. This course would suit learners who have a strong academic background in Science and English but also participate in regular extra-curricular activities both within and outside of school.

 Enrichment and Extra-Curricular Activities

Staff are consistently willing to commit their own time to extend the opportunities for pupils beyond the curriculum.  Examples of extra-curricular opportunities ran by the PE department throughout the year include; Football, Netball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Rounders, Handball and Trampolining.  We have a variety of sporting teams who compete in both local and regional competitions.  In conjunction with London Youth Rowing (LYG), our Rowing club is one of our largest and most successful activities.  Pupils compete both nationally and regionally, and have regular on-water rowing sessions.

We are very keen on promoting local clubs for our pupils to join, and our external club links are heavily involved within the department’s extra-curricular programme.  Our aim is to provide an exit route for our pupils to participate in sport and physical activity outside of school.
