Statement of Principle

In order to develop mature and confident young people, fully equipped for the demands of further education; higher education and subsequently to take their places in the world, all pupils are entitled to:

  • Have an opportunity to contribute to the shaping of Academy policy
  • Have a voice which is listened to when Academy curricula and policies are being discussed and designed
  • Have input into decision making concerning the future of the Academy


  • To provide the platform for pupils to voice initiatives or to raise concerns which might have a direct impact on the experience of pupils attending St Matthew Academy
  • To encourage pupil engagement in learning and the life of the Academy
  • To nurture aspiration; collaboration; independence; persistence and versatility in our pupils
  • To embed a culture where pupils have high expectations of their own and their peers’ academic achievement
  • To embed a culture of high expectations of conduct, behaviour and respect
  • To design appropriate curricula and extra curricula opportunities for students to voice their views within and beyond the Academy in a ‘professional’ way
  • To promote active citizenship by establishing a functioning democratic body with real impact in the Academy

Structure For Pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4:

  • Any pupil in Key Stages 3 and 4 will be able to put themselves forward to be elected as a member of the Pupil Council.
  • The Pupil Council will consist of two pupils from each year group within the Academy.
  • Pupil Council meetings will be chaired by a member of the Senior Leadership team.
  • The Pupil Council will take place once every half term.
  • A Year Council will exist in each Year Group. The Year Council will be made up of the Year Groups elected Form Reps.
  •  Year 11 pupils will also have the opportunity to become Academy Prefects. Prefects play an important role in the running of St Matthew Academy; assisting and supporting both staff and pupils within the Academy.
  • To engage fully in their learning; developing a fuller understanding of their progress through assessment for learning and learning how to learn
  • To contribute to Pupil Council discussions within and beyond their tutor group; improving verbal communication and discussion skills and developing their ability to negotiate, compromise and operate effectively
  • To take responsibility for their environment, academic progress and standards of behaviour
