Maths in the Real World

We all use math in everyday applications whether we're aware of it or not. If you look hard enough, you'll see math emerge from some of the most unlikely places. Mathematics is the universal language of our environment, helping mankind explain and create.

Maths came to life at SMA on Tuesday 10th March 2020 when we had a Heart Surgeon from St Bartholomew’s Hospital visiting our school. Year 7 were shown the structure of the heart and how the blood circulation works. They learnt why there were different ranges of heart beat per minute for the different age range. This learning extends to their home environment where their homework was to measure the heart rate at rest and after exercise for the whole of their families members, the results will be represented using graphs and a presentation in class.

The heart Surgeon performed a life heart dissection for KS2 and KS3 pupils, where pupils observed the 3D shapes and size of the heart. They were able to make connections with their own heart sizes and location within their own body. What came out of the sessions were their inquisitive questions through being in awe and wonder.

The real aspiring medics for KS3 and KS4 had the opportunity of a Q&A session, where they were able to delve into their interests of the logistics of becoming a medic. They discovered that it took 19 years to become a consultant. What else would you be doing?
