Sports Successes at SMA

Sports Successes at St Matthew Academy

Football Success

We have made a fantastic start to the football season, with SMA winning all games barring one. Specifically Year 7, 8 and 10 being unbeaten in all competitions thus far.

There has been a great deal of work happening on the training pitches that is being translated onto the competitive field. A key message from the Year 8 team ‘Don’t complain! Motivate!’.

Girls Success

We have seen a large number of girls attending after school sports sessions this academic year, with almost 30 girls attending football each week. We have also seen an increase in the amount of girls who attend basketball, fitness and netball club each week.

Year 7/8 girls took part in their first netball game this half term in the Lewisham Schools Tournament. Although it was a very tough and wet competition, we were up against many of the local private schools, the girls showed great determination and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Year 7 girls have their first game this Thursday (17th) against Charter North in the London cup. Due to their commitment and hard work in training I believe we have a good chance in winning the match – good luck girls.

Year 8/9 girls have their first football match after half term against Harris Greenwich

Year 11 Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Championships

We took a group of year 11 boys to take part in their first indoor athletics competition at Lee Valley. This event is attended by many schools over London & Essex. The boys did extremely well, the highlights being Jayden winning the 60m sprint, 1st position for Kofi in the high jump, 3rd in the 300m for Isaac and 3rd in the hurdles for Francis. We were delighted to announce that the boys achieved 3rd position against 30 other schools. Well Done Boys!
