Teaching & Learning
Teaching and Learning is the number one priority at St Matthew Academy, as we recognise that it the most important way in which we show that we care about our pupils. As such, high quality teaching and learning is the standard expectation for every pupil in every lesson, this does not exclude any child in our care.
These expectations consist of the following three ingredients: challenge; engagement and progress. The expectations for Teaching and Learning are also clearly linked to the Learning Characteristics desired for all pupils at St Matthew Academy. The Learning Characteristics posters that are on display in every classroom in the Academy can be downloaded from the tabs below.
Learning at the Academy is interactive, engaging and relevant to the real world. Our pupils have a strong grounding in traditional core academic subjects (English, maths, science and RE) providing a positive platform for achievement in other areas. They learn how to prepare, organise and motivate themselves for work each day, and we support them at every stage of their school career. We want them to be excited by their learning, to recognise its importance and to be proud of their achievements in every discipline.
We expect that the short term results of high quality teaching and learning will be outstanding examination results. However, we know that high quality teaching develops more than just good grades, it develops confident, resilient learners who are fully able to articulate their learning and reflect on how they learn best so that they can move on to even more academic success.
