Secondary Enrichment

Enrichment is one of the best aspects of the pupil experience at St Matthew Academy; offering pupils the chance to try something new, get involved with something they are passionate about and develop lifelong skills that will support university and career applications and serve them well into their future.

In addition to a programme of activities, clubs and educational school trips, pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of schemes, designed to enhance their skill set and attract prospective universities and employers.

Debate Mate is an educational charity, dedicated to improving social mobility through peer-to-peer debate mentoring. Already, our pupils have benefited from mentoring by students at top universities, providing them with the skills they need to become exceptional young leaders, including communication skills and higher-order thinking.

We also encourage pupils to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award; a scheme that inspires students to reach out of their comfort zone in a range of different experiences and skills, beyond the classroom. This personal achievement award is rated by employers as the ‘number one’ award they look for, outside of student achievement. The scheme requires pupils to volunteer in the local community, learn new skills, participate in physical activity and embark on an expedition phase.

The St Matthew Academy Media Centre is a thriving hub of creativity, development and learning; offering pupils the opportunity to achieve qualifications and gain media experience. The St Matthew Academy Production Company (SMPC) produces a termly news programme in partnership with the BBC Young Reporter and entry is granted on an assessment basis.

Pupils at St Matthew Academy are lucky to benefit from our partnership with The Brilliant Club; an award-winning charity that exists to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly selective universities through mentoring from PhD tutors, assignment support and university trips.
