Students at the cutting edge of technology

IMG_1056Students from years 8 to 11 have been working with our corporate partner Thomson Reuters on a cutting edge IT project. As part of the unique project, which is sponsored by Dell, one of the leading technology companies, and educational organisation Apps for Good, students have been designing, researching and producing their own apps.

Working with the latest mobile technology, and linking up with Bob Shurkai, Head of Global at Thomson Reuters in New York and students at the Nelson Thomlinson school in Cumbria, students have designed a range of apps from a financial one to help keep track of monthly expenditure to one that ensures parents keep their promises.

Earlier in the week, the students went to Thomson Reuters to pitch their apps to a Dragons Den of Reuters directors. ‘The directors gave us really good feedback, and advice as to how to make the app work better technologically,’ says Rhys Spencer in year 10 who has been working on his Bankerpro app. ‘It was a great experience to talk to a room full of experts and I felt really professional.’

‘The project comes under our Enterprise umbrella,’ says deputy principal Martin Nirsimloo. ‘IT and enterprise skills are the key skills employers are looking for, and we want to make sure our students are properly equipped for the 21st century working world.’
