Media Centre - St Matthew Academy

Media Centre

The St Matthew Academy Media Centre is a thriving hub of creativity, development and learning. Students are offered the opportunity to achieve qualifications and gain invaluable media experience. They are empowered by using industry standard equipment, whilst enhancing their employability and vocational skillset. This unique learning environment engages with students from ages 5-16. There are a range of activities including; Film making, Photography, Editing, Graphic Design, Photoshop and Illustrator skills, Performance, Sound Design and Advertising. We have an active St Matthew Academy Production company that regularly produces films for the school. They have achieved various awards for competitions, the most recognised being £5000 and Ipads for the nationwide Film Education, which was presented at BAFTA.

The Media Centre provides a learning environment for students on the GCSE Media Studies and BTEC Creative Digital Media Production courses, while also supporting other subjects. Over the last three years students in GCSE Media Studies have achieved 70% A*-C’s. In BTEC there has been a 100% pass rate, with students achieving 17 A*’s over the last two years. The Media Centre supports learning and teachers throughout the school and has built a substantial archive across subjects internally and with external partners. Externally we have worked on projects with ‘ReelHD’, ‘The Big Write’, ‘XMA’, ‘Urban Synergy’, ‘Fix up Crew Action Jackson’, ‘Be Creative’ and ‘Archdiocese of Southwark’, ‘Holy Cross and St Saviour's Primary School'.

The Media Centre has a key role in the SMA Summer School running workshops to give a media and music foundation of knowledge and skills to year 6 transition to Year 7 students. This year two groups of these students achieved 2nd and 3rd in the nationwide ‘Out of Your Hands’ film project.

The Media Centre has an inclusive, innovative environment for communicating in school and with outside agencies. Online we utilise Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Vimeo in order to showcase students work and communicate the latest academy news.

We look forward to communicating with you online or in person.

Enjoy our films and photography,

Dan Simpson
