At St Matthew Academy, we have visiting specialist teachers in the following instruments: voice, violin, cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, keyboard, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, drum kit, and trumpet .
Each year over 100 students are enrolled in instrumental lessons, an uptake which compares well to other schools in the borough of Lewisham.
Students are taught in groups of no more than four (beginner groups) either on rotation in secondary or statically in primary, and lessons are organised flexibly to suit different abilities. In each term students receive ten lessons each lasting 25 minutes.
The cost for lessons is £40.00 per instrument per term or £20 if the student wishes to start at the beginning of the half term. Instrument hire is also available for some instruments at an additional cost of £10 per term or £5 half term.
If you would like further information on how your child can apply for a place on the instrumental programme, please complete the expression of interest form at the right of this page. Though this form does not guarantee a place if spaces are free you will be notified. Once payment is made the student will be timetabled. If places are full they will be placed on a waiting list. For further information on instrumental tuition please email Paul Smith.
Once a year students are invited to perform at the St Matthew Academy Music Recital to parents and teachers which is a very popular event. Students also present pieces from time to time in primary and House Assemblies. Past students have completed exam grades with the Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music which are incredibly prestigious.
